Why would I want to build my personal brand?
Let’s be honest today, it takes money to make money. Now, obviously you can be a naysayer and say you can do just about anything for free, which is true. However, to successfully run any sort of business in a reasonable amount of time, you’re going to need some investment money. Children of wealthy families are predisposed to have more money. Thus, they start with an advantage to be more successful. Bottom line is, there is nothing you are going to do about it. Our society and government are so corrupt with the 1% that you will not beat them, but you can do things to help yourself. The main thing is to build your personal brand.
What is your personal brand? It is you. Everything you do, whether good or bad reflect on your personal brand. In this day and age, the majority have access or some way of finding out way too much personal information about you. We all have done things in our life that we regret and unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about them. But that doesn’t mean you should forget about your personal brand. Start now, and use previous events for motivation. Take a look at your self, and reinvent yourself and who you want to be.
One thing to note is that expertise is perceived. It is not measured and it is not concrete. Why do you trust a doctor who looks at your throat for 30 seconds to tell you that you have Tonsilitis? Because of his/her medical degree. You could just as easily go to Google and realize with 95% certainty that you have Tonsillitis. Why do you trust a personal trainer with a bachelor’s degree to tell you how to get in shape? Because they are physically fit. Their personal brand they have developed so you perceive them as an expert on physical fitness
What is the point?
Well, what are your goals, what do you want to be perceived as, what do you want to do with your life? I want to be an expert on Search Engine Optimization so I can successfully run an online business when I find my passion. I also want to learn Mandarin for personal cognitive development and in case the Chinese run the global economy in the future.
How to Build a Personal Brand

- Books, magazines, blogs, ask the experts
- Join a professional sounding organization or two
- Sempo.org, seopros.org
- Write a publication for free in popular magazines on your topic
- Give free seminars/demonstrations at local colleges
- Ask to give consultation to big businesses in your area
Just remember to create high-quality content or people will see right through you. Also, be sure to note your expertise to others. Before you give a presentation at the local college you should mention that you have been a writer in ___ magazine or that you provided consultation to businesses _, _, _.
